Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Transparency is a cornerstone of effective governance, enabling citizens to hold public officials accountable and fostering trust in government institutions. Digital media has emerged as a critical tool for promoting transparency, providing platforms for information sharing, citizen engagement, and monitoring public officials. In Wukari Local Government Area, Taraba State, issues of governance, including resource allocation and public accountability, have been longstanding concerns. Digital platforms such as social media and government websites enable real-time dissemination of information, enhancing citizens’ ability to monitor governance activities. However, challenges such as limited internet penetration and digital illiteracy impede the full utilization of these platforms. Recent studies highlight the transformative potential of digital media in enhancing transparency (Okoro & Hassan, 2023). This study explores how digital media contributes to promoting transparency in Wukari, examining its impact on governance practices and citizen engagement.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite the adoption of digital media by many governments, transparency remains a challenge in Wukari. Issues such as lack of access to timely information, poor communication between citizens and officials, and misuse of digital platforms hinder effective governance. While digital media offers tools to enhance transparency, its potential remains underutilized due to infrastructural and socioeconomic barriers. This study investigates how digital media is used to promote transparency in Wukari, identifying gaps and opportunities for improvement.
